   Igor Engraver: Features

...I recall thinking: "Am I crazy - am I really going to compose a piece of such dimensions [22 musicians and about 1000 bars] in Igor?!" The result? Igor Engraver really proved to be a very stable program, and in fact, I cannot remember getting any crashes at all!

...I do find the system for inputting music in Igor the easiest and quickest of any I have tried.

...very fast and intuitive to work with ... this program does anything you might want to the music ... Igor has an ocean of special functions and seems to cover all needs ... [when it comes to playback] Igor is in a league of its own. It's almost scary to see how much they have thought of.
--Musikkultur (Norway's largest music magazine, 11/2000)

...One of the most spectacular things about Igor is its playback feature, which is extremely useful. Normally, when listening to synthesised playback, you soon get very tired of the music. Igor Engraver on the other hand inspires you to create more music. I have always used Digital Performer in conjunction with my notation software in order to try out new ideas. But now I export the music as MIDI files and import them into Igor, and then export the music back to Digital Performer again, to hear what my music really sounds like. Soon I'd like to get rid of Digital Performer and do all editing and experimenting in Igor, from the very start.
--Anders Hillborg, Composer

...There are some very good ideas in your software!

...After downloading and watching the demo movies from your website, I was extremely impressed with the playback capabilities of Igor.

...One of the main gripes many people have about music notation applications is that they assume a great deal of musical knowledge. Igor presents the user with a friendly, no-nonsense interface. ...
A colossal range of instruments is supported from the usual violins, to the Hurdy-Gurdy so you needn't worry about not being able to notate that Turkish folk trio you're working with. Whole ensembles can be assembled in the Layout pane of the window, and dragged across to the Musicians pane to generate all the staffs on the page. ...
Once all the notes have been input, theyre easy to tweak. In this respect, Igor stands out if, for example, a series of notes are linked together with a long slur and one of them needs to be raised in pitch, the slur will move and smooth itself out in real-time as the note is dragged up the staff. Most other programs require the slur to be edited separately. Equally, crescendos are self-adjusting and dynamic markings actually affect the MIDI output.

I was trying Igors bendhat capabilities when I discovered that by asigning a chord to different layers I could let one note bend down at the same time as another went up. (All in the same chord!!) That is amazing! Very smart to use different MIDI channels for this purpose!
This is a very very useful function that I never could have imagined, because this way it is possible to notate very guitarspecific notation and have it played back correctly. The same goes for pedal-steel and some violin stuff too.
        Thank you NoteHeads!!

...I am very excited with the potential of Igor including its playback features, adding intelligence to playback is a great step forward.

... I am very impressed with the program. I usually measure how good a program is by how little I have to refer to the manual - and I am pleased to say that I was able to work out a lot of features simply by finding them in the menus and palettes.

...The supression feature is great.

...Of course, the playback feature of Igor Engraver is indispensable to me in this [TV] production - I can play back my sketches created in Igor for the producer, and he can instantly give me feedback. I truly believe Igor is the film composer's dream - the production becomes quicker and Igor also enables a much more flexible way to work: usually, you provide the producer with a nearly complete score, and there is always too little time to make any changes to it.

...I've always wondered why notation programs weren't "smarter"; why can't they know something about music? Igor looks like it knows more than I do! In the world of notation software: Finale = Windows Write; Igor = EMACS

... It looks beautiful. Very intuitive interface. I've only brushed the surface of it, and it seems very powerful. ... All in all, I think I will enjoy working with Igor tremendously. At long last, a really powerful AND easy to use notation program.

...By the way, the patch system is great. I have other programs with automatic updates, but you often have to double-click the downloaded patch in order to install it. Igor places it automatically in the right folder for you, so you can just sit back and relax. Cool...

...The program seems to me to be very thoughtfully designed, beautiful in both concept and implementation, with great attention to detail. Very impressive program so far, and I have only just begun to learn about it.

...I have been looking closely at the Matrix manual. As I expected, there are some really excellent things here.

...I did not think that inputting music from the keyboard [could be] so easy. Of all the demos and softwares that I have tried, Igor probably was the easiest to use.

...The new patch to make playback more natural has certainly made a noticeable distinction between various types of articulation. Overall, it is very impressive.

...It looks beautiful. The antialiasing really helps to give a better sense of what the printed output will look like. ... Very intuitive interface. Love the contextual menus. Love the "musicians" metaphor.

...I have downloaded the manual and had a good look at it. It looks like a very good piece of software and a well written manual.

...Windows beta two version. Still a little (!) unstable with my setup but looks fabulous, lovely interface, seems pretty intuitive (must go download that manual...) Really looking forward to future versions. Many thanks.

...I am so happy to be free of Finale and its very un-Mac-like interface.

...I listened to the mp3 recording. It sounds great. Usually you (I do anyway) get some sort of two dimensional expression. (Does that make sense?) When you insert a piano or pianissimo it sounds as if you have suddenly gone deaf ,when you insert a forte, the roof falls down. This recording sounds really different. It has nuances I'm not used to hear in MIDI.

...I'm telling everyone I can about Igor. I haven't seen a programme this exciting for years - it will take over the world, I'm convinced of it. The concepts behind it are so "right" that it leaves every competitor in the dust. Even Sibelius, which is pretty good, will be left in the dust.
I'm an expert Finale user, and while the programme can do pretty much everything I need, it's such a pain to do it, and forget about MIDI playback... I love the way Igor is set up - it's almost like the old days with pen and paper, but with instant and realistic playback. I'm really looking forward to Igor 2.0 when I can say goodbye to Finale for ever.

...I hereby cordially extend an invitation to the Noteheads team to relieve me of my addiction to the Windows version of Finale 2001 - especially aspects relating to guitar notation.

...First of all, I must say that I have been VERY impressed with what this program offers. Congratulations on such a good design.
