Igor Engraver: Education

...The Conservatory at Mount Royal College in Calgary, Canada, has a computer lab where students and staff have access to Notation, Ear Training, Audio Editing, Sequencing and other music-related software. We are very pleased to be able to offer NoteHeads' Igor Engraver to our users. I have found this software to be remarkably adept at dealing with all sorts of musical styles - from standard "Classical" music to Jazz charts, from teaching materials to new music composition - Igor Engraver can do it all.
       Three things make Igor Engraver stand out from rival programs:

1. Ease of use. Many programs make the promise, but Igor Engraver really delivers. Users can enter all elements of the piece they're working on (notes, rests, articulations, dynamics, hairpins, slurs and text) in one pass using one tool. It is just like using a pencil in that way, though of course the results look like professionally engraved music. Students generally learn all they need to know about Igor Engraver in an hour.
2. Playback quality. Nothing else comes close to Igor Engraver's "musicality". Igor Engraver understands phrases - it makes passages under a slur legato. Igor Engraver understands dynamics - it will crescendo and decrescendo on single notes as well as play fixed dynamics like mp. Igor Engraver understands trills - you can choose half or whole steps, and it knows that trills for timpani are different than trills for trumpets. Igor Engraver understands tremolando, tremolo, turns, mordents, accents, staccatos - write all these as you would normally - Igor Engraver knows what you expect to hear. There is no need to fuss with making a "playback version" of your file. If you're not totally happy with the details, you can alter the playback behaviour.
3. The score and the parts are dynamically linked. You can have many different layouts of your score, e.g. a piano quartet may require a part for the Violin, Viola and Cello, a Piano score (with the string parts reduced in size) and a "study score" with all instruments at the same size. This is a trivial matter in Igor Engraver, and all 5 layouts are linked. That means you don't have to make separate files for parts. If you make a change in a part layout, the change happens instantly in the score (and vice versa). What a time saver!

Though you may well find that Igor Engraver is smart enough that you don't have to change anything from its default settings, almost all aspects of anything on the page of an Igor Engraver score can be adjusted with a contextual menu, making detailed refinement of your piece very easy.

...This is surely a very excellent product that will stimulate children's imagination and creativity.
