Screen shots
There is now a Quick Tour of Igor Engraver's main features available, including a lot of screen shots of the user interface. And don't forget to take a look at our short movie clips.

Professional results
Igor Engraver lets you produce professional looking music with the greatest ease, as you can see from the example to the right (by Reger).

Igor Engraver assists you in this process by applying its expert formatting rules to the music. However, should you (or your publisher) want things formatted differently, then you only need to tell Igor Engraver once.

Every example on this page is a screen dump. Igor Engraver anti-aliases everything on screen, including slurs, ties and beams. This allows you to work with full legibility at small point sizes.

Default spacing
The following examples demonstrate the default formatting and spacing in Igor Engraver. Nothing has been touched; this is the way Igor Engraver formats things if you don't tell Igor Engraver otherwise. In the example below, notice the automatic shortening of stems on single-line percussion staves: this is something which requires manual adjustment in other programs. Also note how stems are automatically lengthened to accommodate the tremolo markings. Other things to take note of is the automatic system spacing symbol between the systems and the grouping of the staves.

Default spacing
The following is an actual unedited screen shot, taken during music entry. Nothing has been tweaked or fixed up; everything is according to the default settings. We're living dangerously here , most of our competitors let you see only extensively edited screen shots, sometimes the result of many hours of work. However, far more interesting is the quality of formatting you get by default, since this is where your work begins. With Igor Engraver, there is frequently nothing at all to adjust.

Igor Engraver guarantees that
notation elements never collide or touch and will scale measures non-linearly to achieve this, using professional spacing tables such as Ross & Gomberg. You can even define your own that suit your particular kind of music. Or you can just ignore the technicalities and produce great-looking music straight away.
No special formatting commands are necessary. Igor Engraver formats music automatically in the background, while you are entering it. With Igor Engraver there is no need to wait for sluggish updates; Igor Engraver works quietly with what you give it, to achieve optimal results in minimal time.

Courtesy Accidentals & Automatic slurs
The following example is also unedited. You can see how Igor Engraver automatically inserts courtesy accidentals as necessary, even taking other instrument staves into account:

Igor Engraver also formats the slurs for you -- all you do is indicate where slurs are to begin and end. Igor Engraver will place them intelligently, according to the topology of the music, using advanced mathematics to achieve the best results possible, without collisions.

Also, if you edit the music under a slur by dragging a note or a beam, the slur will automatically be updated as you drag.

Chord Positioning
Not all music notation programs position chords correctly in vertical respect to other chords, especially not when they contain seconds or primes (and no other program will format primes automatically).

With Igor Engraver, you can always be sure that your musical ortography is just right. What you see to the left is correct. Igor Engraver knows how to present your music correctly.

Glissando lines
Sometimes you need to write text along lines, for instance with glissandos and portamentos. Igor Engraver allows you to insert slanted text at any angle, fully editable and fully adjustable at all times. Igor Engraver will even do it automatically -- to insert a glissando, all you need to do is press a single key. Igor Engraver knows how to do the rest.

French Beaming
When notes are beamed according to French custom, stems are not drawn all the way to the 8th beam, but extend only as far as the beam closest to the notehead. Sometimes staff lines are even removed from the spaces between the beams to increase legibility. Igor Engraver can do it either way: either the standard way, or the French way. With or without staff line blanking.
Here's a short movie clip which demonstrates French beams.
