Piece Windows
Unlike in other programs, the basic unit in Igor is not
the staff, but the musician. This allows Igor to treat music on a more
abstract level.
Thus, when you select "New" from the "File"
menu, you do not get a blank sheet of music.
You get a Piece Window, an overview of what musicians play in the piece,
and of what instruments they play. In the right half of the top example
you can see nine musicians, of which some play single instruments, such
as the Corno Inglese, one is a female chorus, and yet others are string
sections consisting of many players.
Note
that Igor knows the score names and abbreviations of all instruments.
The left half of the Piece Window shows how the musicians are combined
into Layouts, which can be printed and displayed on-screen for editing.
The top layout is named "Score" and contains all the musicians.
Under it can be seen single-musician layouts for the instrument parts.
Note that the small icons to the left of the layouts
indicate what type the layout is: they have different properties. For
instance, part layouts display cues, but scores do not.
The bottom piece window contains the same kind of score setup.
It was created by simply dragging a score layout to an empty Piece Window,
the layout and its musicians were automatically recreated in the new Piece.
Before the instruments were dragged to the new piece, its score language
was set to French, which resulted in the instrument names automatically
being translated into French.
