Music Entry
One of the four ways of
entering music in Igor is to double-click on a staff. Igor will then enter
Music Entry Mode and become a highly intelligent and flexible input daemon,
accepting music either from the computer keyboard or from a MIDI keyboard.
The process of entering music has been carefully streamlined to
approximate working with pen and paper, there are no modes, and you can
enter all aspects of the music at one and the same time: pitches, articulation,
dynamics, hairpins, slurs, even lyrics.
To create a slur you press
one single key. The slur automatically stretches as you input music to accommodate
the phrase, without any collisions whatsoever.
To create a crescendo or diminuendo hairpin, just press another key. Creating
a tremolando is just as easy, as is entering a glissando. They will all expand
and/or contract as you enter the music. Adjustments are rarely necessary,
but everything can of course be tweaked and modified on-screen.

The floating window to the left displays the musical environment at
the insertion point (the red blinking cursor): it will always show you what
key you are in, the current clef, the time signature, even the chromatic status
of the pitch to be entered. It also displays the current articulation, slurs,
ties and glissandos, and so forth. The window will follow you intelligently
as you move around in your score, trying to avoid overlapping the music, but
keeping comfortably near to the insertion point.
The insertion point can also be expanded entry by entry or note by note
and can then be used to apply and/or remove articulation, dynamics, etc,
within the selected range of music, just as in a word processor. It simply
can't be made any easier.
